Eligibility.

The APA is seeking a passionate cohort of professionals to co-create a meaningful learning experience.

The selection committee considers candidates' professional background and leadership potential, as well as demonstrated interest in Africa policy. Candidates should exhibit exceptional leadership potential — through experience, promotion, community action, or as witnessed by peers and superiors — and should be able to express how the APA will benefit them as future leaders.

Requirements

  1. Based in the DC metro area.
  2. At least two years of full-time work experience in a field related to sub-Saharan African politics, security, development, or economics.
  3. 36 years old and under.
  4. All required application materials must be submitted correctly and before the application deadline. Incomplete or incorrect submissions will be disqualified.

Frequently asked questions.

Is there a cost associated with membership?
The Africa Policy Accelerator is free. APA's partners cover the cost of any dinners and engagements that happen onsite or are pre-arranged. Members are responsible for costs relating to any unplanned offsite convenings.
What type of time commitment is expected of members?
Members typically meet for 90 minutes once a month (between 6–7:30 p.m.) in an informal setting. Additional engagements, including virtual meetings, may occur but are less frequent and optional.
What is the duration of an APA cycle?
The APA is a 9-month commitment. The next cohort will run from mid-October 2026 through June 2027.
When can applicants expect to be notified of a decision?
All applicants will be notified of selection decisions by mid-September 2026.
What is the typical size of an APA cohort?
There are usually 25–30 members in an APA cohort.
Are members allowed to invite non-members to join the monthly APA meetings?
While APA members may invite speakers as guests to address the cohort from time to time, only members are expected to join the monthly meetings. There are also opportunities to invite non-members for events like the annual alumni event.
